Swede seed can be sown direct from April to mid June. For earlier crops, they can sown under protection in modules from March for transplanting 4 weeks later.
Swedes need quite a bit of space to develop. Space rows 40cm apart and thin to between 20-30cm within the row depending on the size you are trying to achieve.
- Swedes grow slow and steadily and should not be over fertilised. Too much nitrogen will cause them to grow too fast and make them more prone to splitting and soft rot
- Swedes are sensitive to boron deficiency and low boron will cause a disorder known as ‘Brown Heart’ which causes brown patches and possibly hollowing inside the root
- Flea beetles can be a problem in dry spells. These can be kept out with a very fine bionet. Keeping crops watered in dry weather also helps
- Cabbage root fly can also be a problem and can be kept out with the same netting
